As a young man, Constable McNeil spent his summers on the Mackenzie River and his winters crisscrossing Canada’s North on dogsled patrols for as many as 700 miles, earning $2 a day, plus “food, uniform, underwear and toothbrushes.” He was one of the first pilots in the RCMP “Air”Division. In the Second World War, he flew with the RCAF, and rose to the rank of Wing Commander. In peacetime, he led the RCMP Musical Ride across North America to Hollywood and made friends of movie stars. A devoted family man and dedicated community leader, he made a difference in every posting—and left a lasting legacy.

Our wood signs are made with a painted MDF backing. The backing is encased in a dado cut into the frame (ie. not stapled to the frame). We use 3/4" thick x 1-1/8" deep pine or spruce. The letters will be made from 1/4" MDF or 1/8" matte black acrylic. If they are made out of 1/4" MDF, the letters will be pre-painted, then cut on the laser machine. This means that the edges of the letters will not be painted but will have a finished laser cut edge.

The frames will have natural knots and markings. These markings create an unique touch on every frame. Due to this, the appearance of the frames may differ slightly and each piece may take the stain differently.

Manitoba-born John Hanlon was a sailor in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. In late November 1944, the frigate he was posted on was docked in St. John’s, Newfoundland. John decided he and some friends should cut down a few evergreen trees and stow them on the ship to surprise their fellow sailors on Christmas morning while they were at sea. On Christmas morning, they were in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean on their way back to Canada, when John and two friends brought the trees out of hiding. The other sailors on their ship were surprised and thrilled. They set about decorating the trees and celebrating Christmas. Other happy recipients of this unexpected Christmas gift were some small English children who were being transported to safety in Canada on another ship within their convoy. A tree was sent over to the children, on a line thrown between the two ships.
