Elizabeth Ranger (b. 1984), uses watercolour, gouache and pencil to create intricate, surreal paintings that explore ideas of fluidity, mortality and the spirit.  Coming from a place of femininity but also post-gender queerness, and inspired by the symbolists and turn of the century illustrators, she uses abstractions, fantastical elements, organic textures, and vibrant colours to bring her works to life.  Born in Ottawa and trained in Montreal, she currently lives in Halifax with her two young kids and two old cats.

“Returning" is a painting about our connection to the natural world. Rachael Speirs is an award-winning artist from Toronto. As a self-taught artist, Rachael looked to her childhood picture books and her grandmothers embroidery work for inspiration and to practice her skill. Rachael’s education and working career in social work is reflected in the humanitarian elements of her art. Her pieces are a humanistic visual metaphor steeped in narrative.

‘There is nothing to fear’ is a metaphor that connects the viewer to their childhood imagination. Like opening a picture book and not knowing the words. Its about how our perceptions and experiences of the world can shift between day and night.

It creates bonds between fathers and sons. It forges friendships that last a lifetime. When the family home in Big River, Saskatchewan, is sold, Todd Devonshiredecides to visit his roots one last time and retrieve all the hockey mementos he'd promised to pick up someday. Packing up pictures, old hockey jerseys and his vast collection of O-Pee-Chee hockey cards, Todd reminisces about his youth as a player and avid fan in a comical and poignant coming of age.

"A long time ago, Our People came from the Northern Woodlands to the Great Plains looking for food," Grandfather said. "They saw that the Buffalo lived in harmony with Mother Earth the same as Our People did."

Through the Creator, the buffalo gave themselves as a gift for the sustenance and survival of the Plains Cree people. The largest land animal in North America once thundered across the Great Plains in numbers of 30 to 50 million. They provided shelter, food, clothing, tools, hunting gear, ceremonial objects and many other necessities for those who lived on the Plains.

But by 1889, just over a thousand buffalo remained, and the lives of the Plains Cree people changed. The buffalo is honoured to this day, a reminder of life in harmony with nature as it was once lived. This is the story of how the buffalo came to share themselves so freely.

"Sober Words and Drunk Thoughts" is the first poetry book released by Evan Ly. This collection has contributions from 2011 to 2024.
